Wise Owl

Is there anything quite as eerily atmospheric as the call of an owl? But the t’wit t’woo of the Tawny is, in fact, a duet between a pair and is often heard as winter approaches and they protect their fiefdom. You can find the block here.

The Owl is our penultimate block and will make use of all the techniques we've learned over the past seven weeks. Including the snowball technique that we used on our first block, the Gothic Gatehouse, which we'll be adapting to create the Owl's distinctive eyes.

CUTTING...

If you’re cutting from yardage be sure to cut the 14.5” square for your cobweb block before you cut your pieces for the Raven.

Follow steps 1-4 in your pattern

PIECING THE OWL'S WING...

Follow steps 5-10 in your pattern...

You can find my detailed post on making dresden fans here.

PIECING THE OWL'S EYES...

Follow steps 11-12 in your pattern...

The Owl's head is, essentially, a flying geese unit, with the the eye units replacing the 'sky'.

TIP: You may find it easier to push the seam allowance AWAY from the eye unit - as shown in the final photo, above - before you trim it.

PIECING THE OWL'S BODY...

Follow steps 13-14 in your pattern...

The shaping to the Owl's torso is the same as the Raven's. I would love to pretend that the wonderful pattern placement on my Owl was deliberate, but it was sheer good luck.

PIECING THE OWL'S LEGS...

Follow step 15 in your pattern...

The Owl's legs are, again, made in exactly the same way as the Raven's.

...ASSEMBLING THE BLOCK

All of the elements of my block laid out and ready to assemble

Follow steps 16-17 in your pattern...

Next week we will be making our last Spellbound Sampler block: the Cobweb and *shiver* the Garden Spider...
