From my Sketchbook: Count your Chickens

I have a delightfully happy quilt to share with you today as Count your Chickens flutters into the new issue of Today's Quilter.

The French Hen block made her debut in my Twelve Days of Christmas sampler and was a joy to make, so here she is again, shaking a tail feather in the beautiful Dawn on the Prairie prints by Fancy That Design House for Moda Fabrics.

I'm always inspired by vintage artwork and this poster, found on Pinterest, was not only a starting point for the colour scheme, but practically an invitation to make my chickens as colourful as possible...

The prints in the Dawn on the Prairie collection have plenty of contrast in both colour and scale, adding lots of interest to my blocks. The bigger body and wing pieces allowed the large-scale prints to really shine and the dash of yellow I used for the chickens' beaks - and our darling chick - tied all of the blocks together. I emphasised that link by choosing the same print for my binding.

I found a gorgeous printed sheet from La Redoute for my backing and Jayne quilted it with... wait for it... feathers (come on, what else!) which added lots of scrummy texture.

You can find Count your Chickens in the next egg-cellent issue (113) of Todays Quilter - sorry/not sorry - which will be arriving at subscribers' homesteads any day,

Nicola xx
