This tutorial can be used with the L'Oranger bonus block. There are also directions at the end of the tutorial for adapting the pattern to make a matching bottle bag.

You will need...

​

1 14½" square L'Oranger block

1 Fat Quarter of contrast fabric for the the bag outer

2½" x 15"  scrap of fabric for the channels

½ yd lining fabric

16" x 30" pieces of fusible cotton batting

2 yds of ribbon 

Washable pen/chalk pencil

Cutting...

 

1.      From the contrast outer fabric cut as shown, below: -

2.      From the channel fabric cut 1 2½" x 13" piece and 1 2" square.

 

3.      From the lining fabric cut 1 14½" x 28½" pieces.

​

Please read through the pattern before you begin. Fabric is always placed rights-sides-together and joined with a ¼” seam allowance unless otherwise noted.

Preparing the outer...

​

4.      Join the 4½" x 14½" contrast outer piece to the top of the L'Oranger block and a 10½" x 14½" contrast outer piece to the bottom, pressing away from the l'oranger, then fuse the batting to the wrong side.

​

5.      Hand or machine quilt the two layers together to make the outer layer. I chose to hand quilt a simple diagonal crosshatch. Trim away the excess batting.

Preparing the channels...

​

6.     To prepare the top channel, turn a double ¼” hem on both SHORT sides of the 2½" x 13" piece and topstitch. Press in half, wrong sides together, along its length.

7.     The side tab is made in a similar way, by making then topstitching a double ¼” seam on opposite sides of the 2” square, again pressing in half  wrong sides together.

Assembling the sac...

​

8.     Lay the quilted outer layer right sides up and pin the channel in place along the top edge.

Place the lining on top - right sides down, aligning with the edge – sandwiching the channel and sew the layers together along that one seam only.

​

9.     Pull the two layers apart, pressing the seam open and reposition them - again right sides together - so that the seam you’ve just sewn is now aligned at the centre. 

 

Position the  tab, 3" from the bottom corner and tucked between the quilted outer layers as shown. Pin the remaining two sides together, marking a 6” opening in the lining, and sew along the the long side only - REMEMBERING TO LEAVE THAT OPENING - to create a tube.

10.   Press the seam open and reposition it along the centre of the tube, then stitch across the two short sides.

​

11.   To box the corners, mark a 1½" square at each corner - that is 1½" from the stitching line and the side of the sac - and cut. Realign the cut edges and stitch closed, as shown.

Box the corners of the lining in the same way.

 

12.   Turn the tube right sides out, press lightly and slip stitch the opening closed before pushing the lining into the quilted outer. Press around the top of the bag and topstitch.

13.   Thread the ribbon through the top channel, then thread both ends through the tab and knot to secure. Now you're ready for a trip to the boulangerie, or to attract admiring glances at your local supermarket ;-)
